Configuring Dial-Up Networking for Microsoft Windows 98

The following information will assist you in properly connecting a computer running Windows 98 to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Have a copy of your Windows 98 CD available in the event it is needed to copy additional files.

NOTE: This instruction is intended for those with some computer knowledge. Advanced technical assistance should be provided by your ISP.

Preliminary Steps:

Step 1: Once you have started up Windows 98 click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

Step 2: Double-click the Network icon

Step 3: You may be prompted that TCP/IP was not previously installed on your computer.

Click the OK button.

If you are not prompted to install TCP/IP proceed to step 8

Step 4: At some point, you will be prompted to reboot your computer.

Click Yes.

Step 5: After rebooting, it will copy some files and then you will be prompted to provide computer and workgroup names.

Click OK.

Step 6: Click on the Identification tab. Enter a computer name and a workgroup name.

Click the Close button.

Step 7: At this point, you will be prompted for your Windows 98 CD-ROM.

Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM into your drive, pause briefly for the CD to spin up, and then Click OK.

Step 8: After you insert it, you will see several "Copying Files..." messages.

If prompted, click OK, otherwise please wait for all of the file copying to finish.

Step 9: After copying all of the necessary files, you will be prompted to reboot your computer a second time.

Click Yes.

Note: You do not have to have a windows logon. However, if you want to enter a user name and password, you should enter the same user name and password as assigned by your ISP.

Click OK or Cancel based on your preference.

Step 11: You should now be at your desktop and if it didn’t exist before, you should now have a new icon titled "Network Neighborhood".

Step 12: Go into the Control Panel by clicking Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel.

Step 13: Double-click the Network icon.
